Heaven On Earth

Heaven On Earth
A Dream-Come-True Revue
Music, Lyrics & Vocals by Kay Harper
Orchestrated by Michael Guttilla

It all started on my ironing board. As I was steaming a peach pillowcase my mind was suddenly flooded with mysterious music and lyrics. Within seconds I cleared the board and pulled out a pen and pad. It was exhilarating, yet eerie. But since I was already a card carrying member of the do-it-and-see-what-happens-later club, I began to write furiously.

On the 4th of July, Katy Morningstar is bound for New York—confident that achieving her dream of stardom is simply a matter of time. With stars in her eyes and hope in her heart her rainbow ride is about to begin.

* * *

To hear Heaven on Earth press play.

The drone of an airplane engine is heard, then, the syrupy sweet voice of a flight attendant. “Ladies and gentlemen, this is your stewardess Taffy speaking. On behalf of the entire crew we’d like to thank you for joining us this afternoon on our flight from Phoenix. We’ll be landing shortly at New York’s LaGuardia Field. Welcome to New York, New York. The city so nice they had to name it twice.”

Like a Rainbow

Nineteen Seventy-Seven, it’s the Fourth of July
I think I’m bound for Heaven, a home up in the sky
So I look out of my window and I say to the lady in the next seat
I think that I’ve been sent, oh, to give all those folks a treat
Chorus
Oh, oh like a rainbow I’ll color the world as I go
It’ll be Heaven on Earth I know being the star of the show
I came out of the Heartland with my mind in a fantasy
I heard it from the sky and the land just let your spirit free
You know laughter’s been a steady friend, but there’re tears in the black of the night
So reach out for that happy end look up to see the light
Repeat Chorus
I need so much to make a way to find out what I have to say
I’ll travel ‘round the world so far if I can only be a star
In five minutes or less, immediately, if not sooner, would be best
Upon the landing of this plane everyone will know my name.
Katy Morningstar, Katy Morningstar, Katy Morningstar, Katy Morningstar
I read it in the Daily News she can make you lose your blues
She is Katy Morningstar, Katy Morningstar
I heard it from the Times, New York she can really pop your cork
She is Katy Morningstar, Katy Morningstar
She’s an overnight sensation; she’s the topic of conversation
She’s got only one expectation, to see the world in a celebration
She is Katy Morningstar, Katy Morningstar
The sign is flashing “Seatbelt” and I just felt my feet melt
The plane’s coming in for a landing there’s a shiver up my spine
Soon I will be standing in a place where I can shine
And I can feel my heart pound my mind is traveling fast
And I can hear the happy sound of love on the loose at last
Repeat Chorus
It’ll be Heaven On Earth I know
BEING THE STAR OF THE SHOW!

AHHH, I’m finally in New York! I want to climb to the top of the Empire State Building and shout, “Here I am! I’m the one you’ve been waiting for!“

Straight in the Eye

So I grab my bags and I fly out the door
I grab me a cab, I just got to see more
I go uptown, and I take to the street
And I hear the sound of those movin’ feet
That’s when…I find myself out on the avenue
Watchin’ folks like I love to do
Some are movin’ so fast
Some are movin’ slow
Hey, everybody, where ya got to go
There’s madness in this city zoo
So I walk another block or two
Whole lotta people just passin’ me by
Ain’t nobody lookin’ me straight in the eye
I come to a corner and I pull up a chair
I sit real still and start to stare
Where do they come from, and what do they know
What is this ho-hum, and why do they go for this
Madness in this city zoo
Between you and you and you and you
Everybody’s lookin’ for a way to be blind
Seems nobody ever, ever has the time
So there’s madness in this city zoo
Between you and me and me and you
Whole lotta people just passin’ me by
Ain’t nobody lookin’ me straight in the eye
Nobody lookin’ me straight in the eye
Nobody’s lookin’ me straight in the eye

“Hello, DeeDee, this is Katy Morningstar, Tommy’s friend from Arizona? He said to call you. I just got into town a few days ago.  I’d like to… What? Come in on Friday? Oh, yes, you bet I can! THANKS!

 I Knew What to Do

I threw a quilt over a clothesline when I was two
I made the costumes held them together with glue
Chorus
And the (1) neighbors (2) teachers (3) audience came
(Clap, Clap, Clap, Clap)
And they clapped their hands
They didn’t understand how I knew what to do
But I knew what to do – I just knew
When I was in high school I was in drama class can you guess?
I’d break all the rules, I’d put on a play, instead of taking the test
Repeat Chorus (2)
Whenever there was a curtain I’d stop and take a bow
I always knew for certain that I would be here now.
Just think! I’m in the office of a big agent!
I mean, I’m in the office of a big New York agent
I mean, I’m in the office of a big New York agent
Who’s gonna put me on BROADWAY!
I got a scholarship I went to college to be onstage
I was an actress; I even did Shakespeare though I never earned a wage
Repeat Chorus (3)
I just knew!
Well? Whataya think, DeeDee? Can you get me a job on BROADWAY?
What?
What have I done in New York?
I haven’t done anything,
Done anything…at all

“Moma, I’m going to be the walking, talking and smiling day hostess at The Ginger Man. Oh, it’s a really nice restaurant across from Lincoln Center. I walked in two days ago and they hired me on the spot! Oh, and listen to this. Lots of stars eat there. Wahoo!”

They’re Just Like You and Me

Al Pacino’s got the table by the window
Trying to pull a sleight of hand, dying to be the invisible man
Here comes Dustin, they say that he’s adjustin’
To a D-I-V-O-R-C-E, with a string of girls all twenty-three
Baryshnikov is choking in the corner he must be smoking
How does he drink his vodka strong and dance around the stage ‘til dawn?
Chorus
It comes as such a surprise
When I look into their eyes
They’re just looking for a way to be set free
Fame and fortune takes its toll
On the purest heart, on the purest soul
They’re just like you and me
Jimmy Cagney’s growing old, he’s not the myth that I’ve been told
He’s looking and acting kinda weak, I’d like to go over and pinch his cheek
Over by the doorway, Sir Laurence Olivier
The world’s a stage; this is his play, what am I supposed to say?
Repeat Chorus
Standing near my hero, he’s whispering so soft and low
“I’m expecting a call in a minute or so, the name is Robert DeNiro.”
I wanna say, “I KNOW WHO YOU ARE!”
Does he think I’m blind? Does he think I’m deaf? Does he think I’m dumb?
I wanna scream, “You’re such a dream,
Don’t you know I’d like to bear your son?”
I am a fan! What a fan I am!
(Spoken) But I don’t say anything. My mouth is kinda dry, and all I can do is gulp and smile.
Repeat Chorus
They’re just like you and me
They’re just like you and me

Okay. I’m not the overnight sensation I thought I would be, but that’s no reason to give up on my dream. Nothing about getting a job on the New York stage makes much sense to me, but one thing’s for sure. I’ll never get to be a star on Broadway if I give up. So, I audition…a LOT!

Audition Baby

Every Thursday morning I go to my favorite stand
I pick up the paper that tells me the news about the lay of the land
Chorus
‘Cause I’m an Audition Baby
I’ll take ‘em any way I can
Yes, I’m an Audition Baby
And Baby, I know what I am
I look in the back of backstage; I circle the page with a pen
I’ll stand on a line at quarter to nine and that’s in the mornin’ a.m.
Repeat Chorus
I don’t know where I’m going; I don’t even know where I’ve been
One thing sure is certain, when I’m not on a stage it’s a cryin’ sin
Repeat Chorus
They say I’m up for a callback, I put on my face and I go
But when I get there I have to despair, they’ve already cast the show
Repeat Chorus
And Baby…
(Spoken) Oh! I forgot to call my service!

Two things…that’s all I need: 1) a very thick skin to fend off the waves of rejection, and 2) an answering service. (Having a friend like Edgar is also a plus.)

There’s Nothing Right Now, Babe

I call Edgar day and night he’s always sweet to me
He must think he’s got the right to give me sympathy
But I’m not fooled by his kind hello I know he’s really laughing at me so
There’s nothing right now, Babe, no one’s called since who knows when
There’s nothing right now, Babe, don’t you even have friends?
Now Edgar’s really quite a nut his mind is in a twirl
He told me he’d rather be a blue-eyed blushing girl
Oh Katy, dear, girls are really it, I’d give anything just to have some tits
There’s nothing right now, Babe,
No one’s called you for days on end
There’s nothing right now, Babe,
You know I think it’s a sin
I’m on the phone as weeks go by I know just what he’ll say
He’ll let out a sorta sigh which really means no way
He’ll take a pause looking in my slot
And then he’ll say this is what you’ve got
There’s nothing right now, Babe,
You should consider a new career
There’s nothing right now, Babe,
We’ve got openings here
(Spoken) This is getting embarrassing.
It’s been a few weeks,
And a few weeks can become months,
And then months years,
And pretty soon it’s a whole lifetime of
NOTHING RIGHT NOW, BABE!
It was Friday after four, I finally dialed the phone
Edgar screamed, “Where have you been?
I tried to call your home!”
My heart it began to beat so loud,
I knew I’d be standing before a crowd
There’s something right now, Babe
They want an interview right away
There’s something right now, Babe
All I can say, all he can say, all we can say is
Hip-Hip-Hooray, Hooray!

A workshop here, a club act there, even the voice of diphtheria on Sesame Street, but stardom is nowhere in sight. I’m starting to think…

I Don’t Want to Do This Anymore

1981 and I think I’ll have fun I’m in a showcase Off-Off Broadway
So when it’s done I wanna think that I’ve won,
But I keep wondering why I stay
Chorus
I don’t wanna do this anymore
Is there another way?
I don’t wanna do this anymore
How can I have my say?
1982 and I do a soft shoe in a showcase Off-Off Broadway
1983 I’m still working for free another showcase Off-Off Broadway
Repeat Chorus
1984 and I do it some more and
I wonder what for, then someone opens the door
(Spoken) “I got a real live job!
I’m going to Philadelphia to be in a musical!
They’re gonna pay me to sing my heart out!”
Let my people get naked, this is really crude
Let my people get naked, I’m singing in the nude
Let my people get naked, why did I take this work
Let my people get naked, I feel like such a jerk
Is there another way?
I don’t wanna do this anymore
How can I have my
When will I have my
I just gotta have my say!

What a fiasco in Philly—what was I thinking? The shame and embarrassment will probably haunt me forever. Even though I’ve avoided God for many years, I remember how to pray.

Show Me the Way to the Moon

Dear God, Dear God,
Over the years I’ve had a modest amount of success
Through all my tears I’ve had an honest account of the rest
And I know this is really off-the-cuff, but it isn’t enough, it isn’t enough
And I know this is really a little bit rough, but it isn’t enough, it isn’t enough
Chorus
‘Cause I’m sick of saying someone else’s words
And I’m tired of singing someone else’s tune
There’s no kick in staying here with all of this hurt
Show me the way to the moon
Dear God, Dear God,
Deep in my heart I’ve always buried a love of a song
Right from the start I’ve always carried this love all along
I can see it all it’s so very near as I’m sitting here, I’m sitting here
I can free it all it’s so very clear as I’m sitting here, I’m sitting here
Repeat Chorus
Trying to be set free
I’m just dying to be only me
Repeat Chorus

God is giving me His strength and hope! There must be a way for me to express what I have pent up inside—something I can do, something that I know!

I’ve Got to Let It Show

I am going around the circle keeps turning me inside out
I am going around my heart is so full of doubt
Chorus
There must be something I can do
There must be something that I know
If there’s a way to make it all come true
I’ve got to let it show
I’ve just got to let it show
I am full of a dream that keeps me living out on a ledge
I am full of a dream that takes me out over the edge
Repeat Chorus
Here I am with music ringing in my ears
I can write the song that’s lingered through the years
My way is clear
This is the something I can do
This is the something that I know
This is the way to make it all come true
My song can let it show
I’ve just got to let it show
I’ve got to let it show
Oh, Oh like a rainbow
I’ll color the world as I go
This is what Heaven On Earth must be
And love is the key, the key to being free
Yes, love is the key that set me free

I’m writing music and lyrics like crazy!  Who knows where these songs will lead, but this one’s the one I hope will come true.

Heaven on Earth

Some people live with a jungle beat, and they dance to the sound of a drum
Some people live in the desert heat, and they prance around in the sun
Chorus
But whatever you do, do it fine
And wherever you are be a star
Shine, Shine, Shine, Shine, Shine
If you and me set our love free
The day will come when we will see
We’ve given birth to Heaven On Earth
We have given birth to Heaven On Earth
Some people live in the ocean breeze and they love that golden sand
Some people live with the birds in the trees and they look out on their land
Repeat Chorus
This game of fear we play just keeps us out of sync
With the same old tears we pray to find the missing link
I say
Repeat Chorus
We’ve given birth to Heaven on, Heaven on,
Heaven on, Heaven on, Heaven on, Heaven on,
     Heaven on Earth!

I’m leaving New York. True, I didn’t become the world’s greatest actress, but I see now something so much more significant has come from all of these trying years. Creativity is like the colors of the rainbow, and now I know it lives in me. At last, being a star isn’t the point.

* * *

I’m leaving New York. True, I never got to be a star on Broadway, but I discovered something much more significant—the glory of creativity. It’s like seeing a magnificent rainbow perched on the edge of a cloud. You never know where or when the sky will be painted with those magnificent colors—just that when it does, it will be breathtaking.

Another airplane engine is heard followed by the velvety smooth announcement of a flight attendant. “Ladies and gentlemen, the Captain has turned on the seatbelt sign in preparation for our descent into sunny Southern California—the palm trees, the warm breeze, welcome to Los Angeles—this is the City of Angels!”

The Sound of the Rainbow

Leaving the past behind, starting out one more time
Where will the road lead, I don’t
I don’t know
But music is found in the rainbow, yes, music’s the sound of the rainbow
Where do I go from here at the start of another year?
Where will the road lead?
I don’t know, but music is found in the rainbow, yes, music’s the sound of the rainbow
Now I know the red so bright
The yellow of the light
Orange is the fruit that’s hanging sweet on the tree
Green just grows on endlessly
Blue is the ocean white with foam
Indigo, it’ll carry you home
Violet lives on the edge of the night
Seeing day turn to night is such a beautiful sight
And music is found in the rainbow
Yes, music’s the sound of the rainbow
Music’s the sound of the rainbow—the rainbow I found in my soul
The rainbow
Oh, oh like a rainbow,Oh, oh like a rainbow,Oh, oh like a rainbow
